Doc's Redline Goods Steering Wheel Rewrap

After 4 months of patient but anxious waiting, I finally received my custom wrapped spare steering wheel back from Redline Goods in Poland today.
For those of you who don't know, I sent the original 4C parking brake boot to Poland to template and now you can custom order an RG boot.
So another 4C owner was selling his spare steering wheel and I thought might as well and send the spare to Poland for RG to template.

Jacek@RG told me, however, that the 4C steering wheel is the worse and hardest pne to work with ever. There was so much temperature treated industrial adhesive used on the stock wheel that when removing the OEM wrap, it took off chunks of composite and rubber from the steering wheel base. So much so, he had to send the base wheel to a professional refinisher to fill the chunked out base and smooth it out.

This is important as any future buyer of a custom RG 4C wrap will have to send their steering wheel to Poland instead of a domestic installer like Nora in Virginia if they want it rewrapped. Sorry fellas.

Anyway, I think it turned out beautifully. Combined with the Centerline paddle extension dipped in black CF, the whole combination is seductively sleek and much more aggressive comfortable feel.

My configuration is black Alcantara surround with Napa leather perforated inserts with dark red stitching.

Without paddle extensions...

With paddle extensions...(was much easier installing the paddle shifter while the steering wheel was off.)

I think that's a massive improvement over stock.

Doc, have you fitted the wheel yet? The reason i ask, is that the stitching at the 3/9'oclock position where you place your thumb rubs like heck. I use driving gloves on the track, but something smoother o the thumbs would be my only reason to do this mod...

Never noticed. I wear traditional Italian driving gloves.

As the temperatures outside flicker with 60+ degree days, it still averages in the 20-30s, making working out in the garage unsatisfying.
Anywho, I finally decided to mount the rewrapped steering wheel and reinstall the Koshi steering column trim pieces.

On a side note, I did take some pictures of the airbag removal and latch mechanism on the steering wheel for you all and will do a DIY write up in the near future. It is a seemingly blind procedure as you will have to know what to unlatch to remove the airbag. Pretty standard latch mechanism but you have to remove the steering column shroud as well as turn the wheel 90 degrees to access the holes behind the steering wheel to get to the airbag clips. Having a proper airbag removal tool is recommended as there is not much space to work with a screwdriver and the display bezel in the way.

Sorry for the suboptimal photos, I have the battery removed for another project so I couldn't readily pull the car out of the garage to get better lighting.

Just to recap, the rewrap is black Alcantara with perforated Napa leather thumb inserts and bottom ledge with dark red stitching. According to Jacek@Redline Goods, removing the 4C OEM wrap was the worst he has ever dealt with, making stateside removal and installation of a rewrap impossible. You will need to send your steering wheel to Poland.

Also, you can see the results of my hydrodipped Centerline paddle extensions with matte clear coat finish. Subtle touch but nicely done.

The Alcantara and perforated leather feel strategically really good and I am excited to see how it feels while on the track.
