Lotus Exige Cup 380

New Lotus Exige Cup 380 Is For Those Who Think A GT3 RS Is Too Civilized
APR 20, 2017 AT 1:16 PM | BY MICHAEL KARKAFIRIS for CarScoops

Lotus added another version to the Exige lineup with the introduction of the limited Cup 380, the most hardcore road-legal variant of the Exige platform yet.

The new model is basically an evolution of the Sport 380, featuring heavily revised bodywork elements which increase downforce by 43 percent, producing up to 200kg (440 lbs), a dry weight of 1,057kg (2,330lbs) thanks to the application of carbon fiber and the company’s extreme engineering and a power-to-weight ratio of 355hp per tonne.

0-60mph comes in 3.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds) while the top speed is 3mph slower than what the Sport 380 can achieve, mostly because of the increased downforce, at 175mph (282km/h).

“The biggest surprise for many is that it’s fully road legal – a considerable achievement considering the car’s performance capabilities,” said Jean-Marc Gales, Lotus CEO. “Unlike some rivals’ cars, this is something that really can drive to a track, set the fastest lap and take the win, before heading home. It’s supremely usable, yet outrageously fast.”

Lotus will only build 60 examples worldwide, saying that the new Exige Cup 380 will become one of its most collectable models ever.

The aluminum chassis has been further strengthened with a steel roll-over bar while the suspension is now utilizing a set of Nitron two-way adjustable dampers and Eibach adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars. There is also an optional titanium exhaust system which saves 10kg off the rear of the car.

The supercharged Toyota-sourced 3.5-litre V6 continues to make 375hp at 6,700rpm and 410Nm (302lb-ft) of torque at 5,000rpm and is mated to a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox with a beautiful open-gate design.

Prices for the new Lotus Exige Cup 380 start from £83,000 in the UK and €109,900 in Germany.

Nice car, but the price is nearly double the price of a 4C, yet it has alu body and average performance engine. Lotus's name makes a lot of sale, but honestly it doesn't justify the price for me. I've been always trying to like Lotus, but engines performances are so disappointing. Even this particular example is no state of art of engine engineering. I do believe that out of the box, Lotus is more capable than Alfa 4C and it has much wider availability of performance parts, but I went with 4C anyway and if I had to choose once again, I'd still take 4C over the same price tag Lotus, any day. 4C is better looking, more technologically advanced (except for the suspension and aero), has better engine, more tunable engine and is more unique car for much less money. And the most important...I can afford it and spend the rest of money on upgrades.

My track car is a 2008 Lotus 211. There is very little to fault with a Lotus on a track. They get driving dynamics down in a way most cars do not. Lotus is not about a fantastic engine, its about light and precise and feel and being almost telepathic.

I love my 4C, but it would have been better if it spent a summer at Lotus geitting the suspension figured out, and while the 4 pot is fun to listen to on the roads, IMHO it is not a world class motor. Frankly I have never driven a 4 banger that made me feel the same way as a V12, V10, V8, Flat six or even a 5 cylinder.

But engines aren't why you buy cars like this, neither the Alfa or the Lotus are that kind of car. They offer something different.

I drove my friend's exige S (3.5 supercharged) earlier this month on track, it is very planned and much more easier to drive than 4c, especially at high speed corner and at corner exit. I assume I could do atleast 1 sec (more like 2 sec) faster than me driving my 4C if I had push the Exige.
